November 4, 1941Miss P.K.Page La Tour Hotel St. Johns, N.B.Dear Miss PageAt the time I had indertaken to do an Anthology of Canadian Poetry for the Penguin Books Limited of England, Colonel Wilfrid Bovey was good enough to direct my attention to yoour work and gave me five of our poems. Of these I liked particularlyFor G.E.R.My letter concerning the inclusion of this. poem in the Anthology went off to Penguin Books ltd., well over half a year ago. It is a matter of great regret to me that this poem does not appear in they proof of the book which I received a few days ago. I can only conclude that the Penguin Books Limited never received my letter. I am the more regretful as my Anthology aimed especially to emphasize the new work being done in Canada, I have watched with much appreciation your appear-ances in the "Canadian Poetry Magazine", "Saturday Night", and, recently, in the new quarterly "Contemporary Verse".I am, however, planning a new compilation from the younger Canadian writers this, I have reason to believe, will be published also by the Penguin Books Limited, some time next year. I hope, if it is agreeable to you, I still nay present For G.E.R., or receive from you work which I could ' consider for, to you further shortly from England.Yours sincerely,

2063 Victoria Street, Apt. 2, Montreal, F.Q.Dear Ralph Gustafson,The paper is somewhat lurid I'm afraid, but it's all I have at the moment.Thank you for the copies of "Voices". It has a swell format and looks smart. Also I think it was interesting. Of course you know how I feel about C.G.D.R. so I need not elaborate. Smith's stuff was very good I thought and I was glad to see Finch again. I was sorry D. Livesay, A. Marriott, Birney and N.Shaw were not in it- -I look forward to a day when the force of the numbers of the young-er writers leaves not a page free for the old boys. Am I too harsh? It is good news about the Poet of the Year. You are doing well - and it must be fun. Do you mind if I send you some other things'? I'm not terribly keen on Desiring Only. I don't mind it being used but feel I've some stuff that's better. Also would you be able to get me a clipping of the review in the Herald Trib? I'd love to see what was said about the whole thing.Good luck to you and congratulations.SincerelyPK PageNote new address.

January 14, 1942Miss Patricia Page The Epicurean Club 1484 Sherbrooke St W. Montreal, Quebec.Dear Miss Page,Colonel Bovey, who was In New York Monday evening, brought good news of my Anthology of Canadian Poetry for the American market. The plan is how to set the entire book up anew in Toronto and print the American edition within the next four or five weeks.I therefore have taken the opportunity of including "For G.E.R." I presume you will give me British Empire and United States rights to this poem for the Anthology?Tentatively, I have in the "Biographical Notes" the following: P.K.Page (1916). Born at Rothesay, N.B., daughter of Brig. Lionel Frank Page D.S.O. Her poems have appeared in the "Canadian Poetry Magazine", Toronto "Saturday Night" end "Contemporary Verse".Would you let me have as soon as possible any corrections to bo made in the above- -- end also ''where educated"?v'.ith best wishes,Yours sincerely.

The Epicurean Club,1484 Sherbrooke West,MontrealJan. 16./42Dear Mr. GustafsonGood news indeed, about the Anthology! As to giving you rights for the poem- -certainly, if they are mine to give --I am much of a greenhorn at the game. "For G.E.R." appeared in Can. Poetry Mag.- -should acknowledgements be made? You will know about that.As to Autobiographical data here are the corrections: P.K. Page (1916). Born in England, daughter of Major General L. F. Page, D.S.O. Poems appeared in magazines mentioned and the London Observer- -(the 'plum' of the let.) Educated at Saint Hilda's School for Girls, Calgary, Alta. With best wishes for the Anthology. I shall await it with interest.Yours sincerelyP.K. PageHope this paper doesn't put your eye out!

1484 Sherbrooke West, Montreal, Pv Q. May 25th. A.Dear Mr. Gustafson,By some strange luck I have fallen heir to an advance copy of your Anthology. It is a good job of work- -congratulations. I would naturally like to see a follow up- -exclusively modern. Talking to A. J. M. Smith the other night I got the impression that the Anthology you and he have collaborated on is a modern one. The best of luck with them both.Today I had a letter from Earle Birney and was distressed to hear that the Canadian issue of Story is no go. I had sent him some of my prose in connection with it and he now suggests that you might be interested in seeing it for your Contemporary Can. Writing. Judging from the letter you wrote to F. R. Scott I am under the impression that your first number is more or less mapped out. Is this so? On the off chance that it's not, I'll send some things anyway . "The Nei-ghbour" is going to appear in a future issue of Preview, the others have not appeared anywhere. It is exciting to realize that Canadian writing is actually on the way up and good to know that the new ventures are in competent hands.Sincerely yours,P. K. Page.

The Epicurean Club,1484 Sherbrooke St., West,Montreal, P. Q.Ralph Gustafson, Esq., 70 Central Park West, New York, N.Y.Dear Mr. Gustafson,Your letter was like an echo- -I had forgotten all about the stuff I sent you and had no idea that any of it had been considered for inclusion in your Anthology of Canadian Poetry. Actually, there-for, my regrets are not great and your letter was more in the nature of a 'lift' than a disappointment. As to the new anthology I should be delighted for you to use ''For G.E.R.". When you hear from England, if you would write to me again I shall send you some of my later stuff which possibly will be more to your liking. But if it is a case of "either, or" I would prefer that you use "For G.E.R." for purely personal reasons. As to your work it is something I have seen far too little of. Doubtless you publish chiefly in the States, but Canada is definitely the loser. With very good wishes for the success of both the anthology and your own writing--I should say, continued success in the last instance,Very sincerely,P.K. February 6, 1943Dear Patricia Page,I apologize for keeping your stories for 90 long. I was most glad to read them-- and "Room & Board" and "Fear"' In First Statement, Have you others you'd care to send on? Short, non-literary?I've been reading your later poems too and was particularly caught by "The Stenographers" end "Desiring only...". Can I use them in a Canadian Issue of "Voices" magazine which I am guest-editing? I expect that the typescript will be ready the end of this month-- and the Issue appear by April. But meanwhile, you might like to send down others that I have not seen, from which I could choose? Is Preview still going? I wrotesome tine ago without reply. With best wishes.Sincerely, sent back: The Neighbour The Lord's Plan Girl in a Glass Looking for Lodgings

1484 Sherbrooke Street, West, Montreal, Que., Canada, February 14, 1943.Dear Ralph Gustafson,Thank you for returning the stories--I was on the point of writing to you, thinking that they might possibly have been lost. I'm afraid I haven't anything else of a different type in the prose line.As to the poems, yes, you may use the Stenographers and Desirjng Only if you wish. Stenographers has been and will be used quite a lot. It came out in Preview and the Forum and A.J.M. Smith is using it in his Anthology. I don't know whether that matters to you. Perhaps it would be better to use something else if you can find anything else of mine you like. As far as I'm concerned I don't mind it appearing againits merely up to you. I shall enclose a couple of others anyway and you can see.I'm very ignorant, but what is Voices? I don't know it atall.Preview continues and by now you will have had as many back issues as we could find--two only I believe.Would you let me know when you decide what poems you are us-ing and also let me know how one can get a copy of Voices.Yours very sincerely,PK PAGE

70 Central Park West New York, N.Y.February 15, 1943Dear Patricia Page,Many thanks for sending the poems along and for your letter. Your imagery always arrests me and I would like to use the Isolationist along with Stenographers In the issue of Voice's. Although the latter was in the Forum and to be used by A,J,M, Smith, as you say, I could not let it go by.Desiring Only I have also set aside and hope to use it in a Poet of the Month Canadian issue if I ever find time to complete my various projects!"Voices" is a long-established poetry magazine down here twenty years, or so, I believe. The editor, Harold Vinal, was taken with my Anthology and asked me to do him > Canadian number. The magazine while not up to Cheago "Poetry" although both use too many women with three names-- is good and I'm hoping the Canadian Issue will be a bumper harvest. Many thanks for digging out the back issues of "Preview" for me. I like to keep current with the new work in it. Could you have me put on the subscription list-- and me know what I owe.I'll send you a copy of "Voices" whenit's out. With best wishes,Ralph Gustafson
