January l4., 1952Mr Frank Flemington The Ryerson Press 299 Queen Street West Toronto 2, OntarioDear Mr Flemington,I had a letter this morning from Dr Desmond Pacey concerning my story,THE PIGEON, which is to be included in his new edition of "A Book of Canadian Stories”. I had written him that the text in the northern review (where the story first appeared) and from which he copied it, is faulty. 'The setter had loft out a whole paragraph, and in another place an entire sentence. Dr Pacey, therefore, asked me to send you directly the correct text of the story.I enclose it herewith and would bo much obliged if you use only this text. If you wish, when the time comes,I would bo glad to proof-read its galley myself.Acknowledgement should be made to Northern Review, where the PIGEON first appeared, and to The Best Short Stories 1950 edited by Martha Foley, where it was reprinted.Sincerely yours, enc.Ralph Gustafson

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISHThe University of New BrunswickFREDERICTON, N. B.January 16, 1952Ralph Gustafson, Esq.Two West Sixty-seventh Street New York 23, N. Y.Dear Ralph,Thanks very much for your letter of Jan. 14. I am sending a copy of it to Flemington, in the hope that he will accept your suggestion and send you several copies for distribution. I take it you haven’t any clue as to why the N. Y. Times wired Ryerson for Canadian Stories. That mystifies me JHope you are writing energetically these days. Did your last letter imply that you are having a book of stories published? I hope so.Yours sincerely,DP: SDesmond Pacey

The book herewith, CREATIVE WRITING mCANADA, at last gives a competent history ofCanadian achievement in the field of lettersfrom the beginning to the present. So little isknown outside Canada and that little is so often passed over, that a word from you in the Atlanticwould be of great help to the book.Pacey asked me if I could help indrawing attention down here- and I said I wouldpass a review copy along to you.Trust all is well?

My friend, Mr. Lloyd Morris, suggested that you might welcome having the book for review in the Sunday Book Review. It is, at long last, a competent history of Canadian letters from the beginnings to the present— and will, I feel, fulfil a particular need outside Canada. Could you draw critical attention to its existence in your columns? The author and publisher wrote me that they would be grateful especially for such attention.Yours very sincerely.
